Aditya Assarat’s movie“Wonderful Town” took home 5 trophies at the Supanahong Awards (Thai Oscars) a few hours ago held at the Thailand Culture Centre, a big win for the Indie flick. Other than vaguely reading about it at Wise Kwai’s Thai movie Blog, I have never seen the film. I might have to hunt it down. From what I gathered from reading Nathan Lee’s NY Times review and random sites about the film, it’s a depressing love story about a female housekeeper Na (Anchalee Saisoontorn ) and a handsome young architect Ton (Supphasit Kansen) set in the tsunami ravaged town of Takua Pa, Thailand.

Oh, by the way, Wonderful Town is being released on DVD in the US next month – possibly before it hits DVD in Thailand. Which is unusual.
It’s also pretty surprising that Wonderful Town would be nominated for these awards, which are usually heavily weighted toward the big-budget studio movies. It’s an indie film that only got a limited release at one cinema in Bangkok last year. The filmmakers should try and give it a wider release in Thailand now that it’s won so many awards.
