Tanya shows off her daughter Leeya

“Tanya” Tanyares Ramnarong’s daughter was born back in June via a surrogate, one of her relatives from America. This past Sunday, Tanya appeared on the “Woody Gert Ma Kui ( Woody born to Chat)”show to show off her daughter for all of Thailand to see.

The instant she saw her child, she felt an instant ‘love’ for her daughter to whom she did not carry in her womb. There is no difference, Tanya told Woody. Whether she carry the child in her womb or not, Leeya is her daughter. Genetically speaking, Leeya is her daughter with her husband “Pek” Sanchai Engtrakul though they did not have Leeya the ‘natural’ way.

On the show, Tanya talked about her frequent miscarriages. She would easily get pregnant, however carrying the child to full term was another matter. After 2-3 months, she would suffer a miscarriage. She and her husband even tried in vitro fertilization, but plantation of her fertilized eggs onto her uterus was never successful. Tanya found the process troubling. Physically, it was painful. Emotionally, it was tiring to create life and  have it quickly be taken away. It also became a moral issue. Those embryos and fetuses she could not carry to full term were living beings. Each failure represented a life lost.

The next option, getting a surrogate. To do something like this, Tanya had to find someone to who she trusted the most and was very close with. That person was her cousin Michelle from America.

Tanya on Woody’s show:

Wow, you learn something new everyday. The sex of Tanya’s child was predetermined. I thought it was illegal to do that in America. Tanya said that she had 5 fertilized egg frozen 2 years ago. Three of those five were ‘good’, meaning they are implantable. The sex of those embryos were predetermined, 2 boys and 1 girl.

The doctor decided to implant a boy determined embryo and a girl embryo onto Michelle’s uterus. If both embryos attached itself to Michelle’s uterus, Tanya could have been a mother of fraternal boy and girl twins. But only the girl embryo survived and that is how she got her daughter.

Tanya does want to try again. She has one embryo left, a boy. If it’s not successful the second time around, she is fine with it. She is happy to have Leeya.
