Another work week, Boo!

The marriage proposal in the “Cupid’s path”

One of my all time favorite lakorn would have to be “Taung Pan Gammathep (Cupid’s passage way, Cupid’s path, ทางผ่านกามเทพ)” starring Janie Tienposuwan and Andrew Gregson. It aired back in 2001 on Ch3 when Janie still had her old nose and Andrew was slender. You could not grasp how obsessed I use to be about this lakorn. I have watched it 3 times now, full runs, not just random favorite scenes. For me, I consider that a lot of hours devoted to one lakorn and I have never watch a lakorn more than once, maybe select scenes, I do.

A scene that I distinctively remember and occasionally go back to watch because it is that good is the marriage proposal scene. It was pure entertainment and intense. It wasn’t a marriage proposal, it was more of a bargaining plan, an option she can choose because she stole 1 million baht ($29, 779 USD) from him. Her evil sister played by “Aom” Sakawjai Poolsawas needed cash badly because she was being blackmailed by the guy villain of the lakorn or maybe she was in debt with the mob. I don’t remember, I didn’t care too much about her. All we need to know is that Janie needed money to help her evil sister and she stole that money from Andrew. When he found out, he was livid and felt betrayed but still he wanted her. What is the guy to do? He forced her into marriage that’s what he did. HAHA. LOVES it!

Janie is Pat in the series and Andrew is Pope, they are in-laws. Her sister Pim (Aom Sakawjai) is married to his father played by Montree JenAksorn, the man currently playing Ploy Cherman’s father in “Namtan Mai (Burnt Sugar)”. If you want to be technical, Janie is Pope’s aunt by marriage. Kinda weird.

At the beginning of the lakorn, Pope (Andrew) returns from studying aboard and learns his father has left his beloved stepmother to marry a woman who is half his age. He considers his new younger stepmother a gold-digger.To get back at his father, on the day of his father’s wedding, he organized a plan to kidnap the bride and make his father lose face. Being stood up at the altar is humiliating and Pope wanted to humiliated his father to the utmost. One problem, he kidnapped the wrong person, he kidnapped her younger sister Pat (Janie) instead. He takes her to his private island and held her captive for several weeks as his father, unbeknowst to Pope, honeymooned with his new bride in Europe. Gradually, Pope falls in love with his captive Pat because she is not the woman he was expecting, Pat is a lovely woman who can cook and be nurturing, drastically different from her older sister Pim, but he doesn’t know that at this point.

In episode 5 he releases Pat when he gets a letter from his younger sister stating that their father was in a car accident while honeymooning in Europe. After reading the letter he looks at Pat and realizes he kidnapped the wrong woman. When he dropped her off at her house, he looks down and asked, ‘before you leave, can you tell me if you are the real Khun Pimonpa (her older sister) or not?’

“I can be whoever you want me to be.” She answered. She said her goodbyes and got out of the car, leaving him feeling guilty for what he had done. GOOD, GOOD scene.

Several months passed and Pat started working in Pope’s company as his secretary. They are getting along and even started to see each other outside of work. Everything is peachy and Pope even trusted her with handling the company’s money safe. Then, she stole from him and everything just went downhill from there.

She stole 1 million baht ($29, 779 USD) from the company’s safe and he found out. He gave her 3 days to pay him back or else. After he confronted her, he fired her and she spent the rest of the day running around town trying to sell every valuable item she owned. She even tried borrowing money from friends. She was able to collect 180,000 baht ($5,360 USD). Her sister to whom she stole the money for wouldn’t even help her. Her sister was really an ungrateful biatch!

After a rough day trying to collect money to repay Pope, she arrives home exhausted. She becomes more anxious when she learns from her servant that Pope has been waiting for her all day. After her servant left, she showed him the rolled up money she had collected that day. “I only have 180,000 baht, let me use this as an installment.”

He takes her rolled up bills and nonchalantly tossed it on the glass table. “What do you want me to do with only this much money. I want a stack of money.”

At this point, she tried to refreshed his memory. “But it has not been 3 days yet.”

Like he cares, so he said this, “I have changed my mind, I want my money today.”

Pat:“What game are you playing now?’

“Who said I was playing a game? I’m speaking the truth.” He replied in a cool calm manner.

“If you can’t pay me today, I will tell everyone the truth. Doesn’t your father returned today?” He continued to say.

Pat pleaded with him not to. “You can’t do that. My father is ill, you can’t do a crazy thing like that.”

Pope:”Don’t even make excuses, don’t even think about fooling me.”

“Then what do you want me to do? You are coercing me up to this point, it’s not easy to earn 1 million baht, you know.” She raised her voice at him.

She lowered her voice and asked, “can’t you give me more time?”

Again he doesn’t care, he has his own plans. “That’s not my problem. If I want my money today, then it is today.”

Pat gives up and looked at her watch. “Right now, it’s 8pm, I have 4 hours left. Midnight today, I will pay you back completely.”

She picks up her purse on the glass table and prepares to walk out. He stops her with a question, “where are you going?”

She turns around to look at him, “I’m going to sell everything that I have…blood, meat, heart to whoever wants to buy it. If I get desperate I will even sell my body to earn money to pay you back.”

Hearing that she is going to sell her body, he was not happy and slashed out at her. “Sell your body? When did you start thinking of this? So do you actually think it is the best option for you?”

Pat:“Though it is not the best option, it is the best path for a desperate person like me.”

He steps back.  “True, you have a commodity, but do you actually think it  is going to be easy? No one is going to pay  you 1 million baht to sleep with you  the first time.”

He starts to look at her body up and down. The most funnies thing ever happened, she covered her mid area with her purse. “Don’t be perverted towards me.” She shouted at him.

He walks towards her: “why are you saying that, I’m giving you an estimate of your value. Look at your waist, go ahead sell your body. Once you get out there, you will only get half, then you keep selling your body and it will probably drop down to a few hundred (baht).”

Pat is disgusted and outraged. She hits him with her purse and yells at him. “Stop it right now, I don’t want to hear anymore, you can be quiet now.”

Pope:“What? If you can’t even listen to it, what will happen when you do it for real? Maybe you don’t want it later, you want it now.”

Completely enraged, she starts hitting him with her purse and he grabs her arm. “I don’t like women who lie.”

She struggles to break free from him and he stopped her by saying, “why are you shaking around for? You should pamper your customer. I might just be your first customer to enjoy your goods.”

She uttered his name in shock and he stared sternly at her: “you don’t have to sell your body to anyone, I will buy you myself.  It will be easy. You won’t have to do anything, just live with me for 3 months, how about it? A payment of 1 million baht, I think that is reasonable.”

Pat is just flabbergasted at this point, “you are going to buy me to be your mistress?”

Pope:”Yes, I have spoken very clearly. A man buys a woman, it’s not strange at all.”

She breaks free from him and pushed him away. “I have never met a more despicable man than you. Listen to me well, if I have to sell my body, I will never sell it to you EVER!”

He was like okay, whatever. “Fine. Go. You don’t have a lot of time left. And,I hope you find a wealthy Sia (a rich Chinese man).”

At this point, Pat can’t take it anymore and started hitting him. “Get out of my house right now.” She demanded. She became too excited, she fainted.

He carried her to her room and made his final offer. “So what about it, your father is here. Will you accept it or not? If not, I will go down and tell him everything. You should imagine what he would think, his favorite daughter stealing money.”

Again, she pleaded with him, “you can’t do that, he is not well, you can’t make him feel uneasy. Please I beg of you.”

Pope:“Fine! Tomorrow meet me at the courthouse at 9am. Don’t think too much, being with me won’t be torturous. Maybe you will like it and stay for more than 3 months.”

Hey for those who want to read a synopsis of this lakorn, it is available at sarnworld’s wiki. I initially wrote the brief synopsis, and, if I am correct, Lyn filled in the the character names and details…and included pictures…love it, we’re both that obsessed with it…:D We should just start a fanclub…hahaha…:p

HAHAHA! I THINK THE FUNNIEST THING FROM EVERYTHING WAS WHEN YOU SAID “Back when she still had her nose.” LOL! THAT WAS SO FUNNY! I’m not really a fan of Janie. I’ve never seen a drama of Andrew’s either. But I don’t like him being so slim. I like him now being buff. lol. Anyways, thanks for sharing. Maybe I’ll go check it out.

I do have a request as well. My favorite drama of all times, I have no clue what it’s called because I can’t read Thai and I don’t know the actor’s names either. It’s a really old one back in the days around the 90’s.

It’s about a girl who rich and she was ingaged to a man but she didn’t want to marry him so she ran away and disguise herself as a poor, ugly, unfashionable girl. Then she met the main guy [who was rich] and during that time the pra’ek’s gf was studying abroad and so the pra’ek’s grandma wanted him to get marry ASAP, so he decided to hire the girl as his “pretend” wife until his gf returns. Since the girl was desperate for money, she accepted. For some weird reason, the throughout most of the drama the pra’ek called the nang’ek [auntie] Mon Kaew or something like that all the time, because she lied that it was her name. The grandmother was in love with the nang’ek but the mother-in-law didn’t like her because they thought she was “poor”. But anyways, the pra’nangs fell of love, of course. Then later on, she had to leave because the pra’eks gf came back. And turns out the nang’ek and the pra’eks gf were cousins. So she had to leave and was getting married to that guy that she was engaged to, then the pra’ek came and stopped the wedding. It was the most hilarious wedding ever! Because the pra’ek kinda lied to everyone that the nang’ek was pregnant with his kid [but really, she wasn't] and just kinda took her away. It’s a comedy drama. But it’s very good. So if you’ve seen it, lyn, or might know what I’m talking about then please help me. :(

Anyways, sorry so long. Thanks again. (:

I agree with Lyn, this is one of the best lakorns ever! In all my lakorn watching history, there hasn’t been one that beats this one, none! It’s modern, has good pacing, and I love the multiple stages that Andrew and Janie’s character’s relationship goes through.

I love that Andrew chases after Janie and that there aren’t any n’rais breaking them up (except Aom). No ditzy n’rai beating up Janie. I also love how the ending comes full circle and ends where it starts-for those who’ve seen it, you know what I mean.

There are no subs available. I tried to start somethings, but the problem is that there aren’t any good video clips at youtube. I’ve even tried to get this one dubbed in a language I understand, but no takers either.

Oh well. Thanks for the write up about this scene though, Lyn! Could I request that you do a spot translation of the part where they’re at the grocery store and Andrew’s holding a cauliflower floret and saying something about marriage? And (I know I ask a lot) the scene where she’s tending to his wounds after his bar fight. I just want to know what she’s laugh about…thanks!Damn, I wrote a lot.
