There has been two articles from Thairath newspaper describing Noon Woranuch and “Aum” Patcharapa Chaichuea’s lakorn “Kulap Neua Mek (Roses Above the cloud)” as a bad influence on kids and inappropriate for society. Advocate against the lakorn say it promotes sex, violence, and inappropriate behavior–they disapprove of Aum and Noon’s body hugging clothes and short skirts and the constant verbal and physical fighting from Aum and Noon over one guy.
It’s a big debate right now generating hundreds of comments from the public at Kapook.com where the article has been re-posted.
Both articles here and here in Thai. One article is about local market merchants discussing how the lakorn “Roses above the cloud” is bad for their children and how they are seeing big behavioral changes in their kids after watching the lakorn. Apparently some of the kids are imitating what they see. The other article is about how this lakorn is dangerous for kids.
It’s just a lakorn. However, I wouldn’t mind them cutting back on the bitch slapping between Aum and Noon, usually I don’t mind, but it’s just way too much. As one person mentioned in the comment section (comment #476), “in the lakorn, they have to slap each other every 5 minutes over a guy (the person used “husband”), it’s just sex and violence throughout the whole story. To watch it, it terrifies the mind.” As for the clothes, it is pretty skimpy. Again, normally I don’t mind, but as their characters in the lakorn are career women who own a magazine company, they could at least wear a business suit once in awhile or skirts that fall below the knee. I actually want to be more crude, but I’ll keep my opinions to myself. “Kulap Neua Mek (Roses Above the cloud)” is not bad or good, it’s just a lakorn. It just seems like Ch7 is always in trouble with the public. Kom Faek was too violent. Mia Luang is bad for society and promotes extramarital affairs. Shrugs. I don’t watch lakorns to gain any life lessons, I watch lakorns for pure enjoyment. I do see merits in their concerns; however, I do think they are overacting.
It was mentioned in the comment section that Thai lakorns is going down in the dumpster where as Korean dramas, which don’t have crazy bitch slaps are rising in popularity, and all of Thailand loves Korean dramas. Oh great, the big debate wages on, is Korean dramas better than Thai lakorns?
I’ll translate the full article and comments when I get back. Or not.

I disagree w/the reporters. It’s just a lakorn, for entertainment. People should just focus on the good lessons being taught, not the bad. The parents should supervise their kids more when watching lakorns then. I think Thai lakorns are amazing, even w/the slapping etc. but take a look at American films. Isn’t their worst than just that?? sex scenes, all the blood and guts… As for Korean dramas, I don’t watch, but I find Korean dramas all about sadness, and love…ekk too much.
i disagree wit the fcking reporter…they are nothing and has nothing to report or sale…there’s alot of Lakorns that has more violents but i dont really think that it’s a bad thing..About Asian Series or Dramas or Lakorn, i dont think one is better than other…it depends..i’ve seen alot of Asian dramas, series, lakorns or watever, i enjoy Thai lakorns more even though i dont know the Language. i have to say that Thai Celebrities are more hotter, beautiful and sexyier than any other Asian Celebrities..(it’s my opinion so fck off)…Reason, alot of them are MIX wit other Races..Example, Chompoo , Pinky, Ant, Jennie ect….they dont look completely like Asian ( not like Chinese, Japanese or Korean) ..wen i first watched Thai lakorns, i thought, why they had American or European people in it..lol…afterall i knew why cux they are mix..come on..lol…Aboutt his lakorn, i think it’s the best cux the Fashion stuff are too damn hot and all the dress that they wear are too damn sexy..I Love Aum..she so hot wit all clothes she wear..im tire of writing.,…sorry. the spelling isnt right huh..i dont care…
I don’t think there’s should be a debate between which drama is the best. Like someone had mention before, the more you watch it, the more you will get bored. I used to watch Thai lakorn when I was in middle school and then I got bored. I later switched to Korean drama in high school and by the end of high school, I got bored again. I then switched to Japanese drama during college, and now back to Thai, and so fourth. It depends on “what’s new” in each culture that attract you to wach it. When “Goong” or “Hana Yori Dango (Japanese verison)” came out, everyone went crazy w/those two. So again, one can’t compare which country’s shows are the best. But then again, the majority of people who read this like to watch Thai lakorn, so there’s a bias in the polls. Shoot if you go read a Korean drama blog, you can see similar reactions as well (e.g “Koreans/Chinese/Thai/Japanese drama are the best!”).
Anyway, about this issue of too much sexy or too much violence, I think the producers should consider the over-using rape scenes more. It’s like telling a girl, if you get rape by a handsome guy, then he would eventually loves you at the end, and later live happily ever after. Perhaps, they should do a rating system like in the U.S.?
Hey Lyn,
Do you know where there are websites that post what clothes THAI celebrities wear? I can only find the ones for Hollywood stars. I especially love the clothes from lakorns. (:
Thank you!
Elizabeth
sorry but i don’t think kdramas are better than lakorns. kdramas bore me very much.
I also disagree with the reporter because, i think that every slapping or violent scene in “Roses Above the cloud” is like in every other lakorns. For example, Fai Chon Saeng have a lot of slapping scene as well. There were no news about how violent it was (from what i have known of). I think that the reporter should consider making some comparison between other lakorns before publishing this article. After all, this article its just nonsense.
i disagree with the reporters. gosh, they seriously have nothing to broadcast for their articles so this is the best they can do? I’ve been watching this lakorn lately and it’s not definitely NOT violent! trust me, i’ve seen many voilent dramas and this is not one of them. lol. besides, although they slap and hit each other at times, there are scenes that are really funny as well.
I’m watching this lakorn right now. I must say I’m addicted to it. Lakorns/movies/dramas/soaps are all meant to entertain us. If you don’t like it then don’t watch it. People are too offended nowadays. As for the parents, it’s their responsibility to teach their kids right from wrong. It’s no one fault, but their own. Nobody is going to sit around and babysit their kids all day. It’s always the blame game. Everything influences kids today not just lakorns. Magazines, friends, music, internet etc.
I am not Thai but i enjoy watching sub thai lakorns. I find Thai lakorns more entertaining than those of other Asian countries. I definitely do no agree that Korean dramas are better than Thai lakorns at least in the entertainment aspect.
My comment regarding Korean drama, their quality is good because they are one of the top country leading in technology no surprise that their video and sound quality are much better. By the way it is the Korean wave that really promoted them internationally.
I like Thai Lakorn movie because they are beautiful.
