Cute and innocent are two words to describe this series. This is the stage of tenderness before the big storm when she is taken back to the real world and transformed into an ‘adult’. I’m loving their innocent love not spoiled by the ugliness of the real world. At this stage, it’s simple–she has a mind of a child and she learning about first love, how to deal with first love, the emotions involve with first love–the same for him, our naive innocent leading man Saichon in love with his Nangfah.
They don’t know it yet, but they are in love, very innocently so.
The core theme of this lakorn is abandonment, he is frequently making vows that he will not abandon her. When she breaks that vow in the upcoming episode, not intentionally of course, it will be a harsh life lesson for him.
Her leaving him will change him drastically from a young man who never wanted to leave his island out of fear of the real world to a man who will risk everything to find his one and only love. Episode 2, we start to understand Saichon more, he is very simple. Like really really simple, this guy just wants to live, fish, get marry, stay on Min island forever.
Like his confession on the beach when she asked him to take her to the stars, he refuses. ‘No way, the stars you are seeing are in the cosmos, it’s very far away…when I was a kid, I once read a book that if you want to go to the cosmos, you have to ride a space rocket. Even if I can ride a space rocket, I won’t go. ‘ She asked him ‘why’. He answered, he doesn’t like the unknown outside world. Wah. ‘You don’t know what is out there in this other world that is why I don’t want to go out anywhere.’
For now, I’m enjoying these cute moments– by next week, I know the storm is coming. It ain’t gonna be pretty, it will be a whole a lot of angst—you abandon me, you are pretending not to know me, jealousy, greed of love. It’s gonna be a THAI LAKORN.
For now this is sweet, they are just making vows–vows to stay together forever and be as one family.
Episode 3 starts off with a bit of confusion with Saichon being assaulted by Mamee, she wants him as her husband. She attacks him with hugs and kisses and lays on him on the bed. He is struggling to get her off and then Nangfah walks in on them. She has been up all night patching up one of Saichon’s torn shirts. The sight of them is kinda shocking and she is scared, she is learning from other people about love and how people express their love.
Previously, Saichon had told her that kissing and hugging are expressions of love between two people who are married. She getting scared, she is scared of losing Saichon to Mamee. What they are doing is expressing love, so they must love each other, then they will get marry, and she will have to leave as part of the Min island culture. This is terrifying. She will be alone and he is breaking his promise to her.
But what she doesn’t understand is that Mamee is forcing herself on Saichon.
She yells at him. ’Saichon, you are a liar. You told me we are gonna be together forever. You are a liar.’
She runs into the ocean and Saichon follows her. He stops her from going further and asked what is the matter with her. ‘What is wrong with you? If anything happens to you, what will I do?’
She yells at him again and tells him to leave her alone. ‘What happens to me, it is my business. It doesn’t involve you. Soon you will be Mamee’s husband, then you will kick me out of the house. You broke your promise. You said we would be together forever??!!!’
Saichon:’Who said I was gonna be Mamee’s husband?’
Nangfah crying:’You did. People who hug and kiss each other will be husband and wife. And Suay said that people who are husband and wife become united as one. Just a moment ago, you and Mamee became as one. Soon you will marry P’Mamee, then you will kick me out to live somewhere else because you want to start a family with P’Mamee. I will be alone. I will not have a home. What will I do. At night, there are night noises and the darkness. I’m scared. I can’t be alone, Saichon. I can’t. I can’t be alone.
Saichon assures that is not the case. ‘Mamee and I are not husband and wife. I don’t love her.’
Nangfah:’Really?’
Saichon puts their foreheads together :’Really. I promise, I will stay with you–like this continuously, wouldn’t that be good?’
Nangfah:’that would be good. You won’t love anyone?’
Saichon:’I don’t know. You can’t tell with these things.’
Nangfah:’Until you find the right person like what you said.’
Saichon:’Yes. Even though I find the person I love, I will not abandon you.’
She stops crying and smiles at him and made him promise again. ‘You promise?’
Saichon:’I promise.’
Back at the hut, Nangfah told Mamee to back off of Saichon because he doesn’t love her and Saichon told Mamee to back off too because he really doesn’t love her.
